Eisern für Menschlichkeit
Signed Warm-Up Shirts for the Wuhlheide Park Railway Inclusive Platform
Since 1956, the Parkeisenbahn, originally one of eleven pioneer railways in the GDR, has been delighting its many visitors through the Wuhlheide. Every year, tens of thousands of children and adults use the small trains to explore the grounds of the FEZ. In order to make this enjoyment accessible to all people in the future, a further platform is to be converted to be inclusive and barrier-free as soon as possible.
The foundation "UNION VEREINT. Schulter an Schulter" will support the project as part of the annual campaign "Eisern für Menschlichkeit," [Eisern for Humanity] which calls for solidarity and tolerance on the occasion of the "Together" International Weeks DFL action day Against Racism.
The men's first team squad will warm up before the away match on Saturday against FC Bayern München (21.03. kick off at 15:30) wearing red T-shirts with the message "Eisern für Menschlichkeit" on the front. These warm-up shirts from Union's outfitter adidas will be signed after the match and auctioned off on the Union auction platform on eBay at eBay.de/union. The women's team will also wear the slogan shirts for their home game on 23.03.2026 against SV Werder Bremen which will be available for auction afterwards. The proceeds from the auctions plus donated funds will fully benefit the inclusive platform project of the Parkeisenbahn Wuhlheide. Construction is set to begin later this year.
"Many people associate the Parkeisenbahn with their beautiful experiences in our immediate neighbourhood. Making this accessible to all people in the future and designing the offer inclusively with another specially adapted platform is a significant challenge for the non-profit Parkeisenbahn company. Inclusion is one of the important pillars of our foundation work, so we are happy to support the project and look forward to enthusiastic participation from the Union family," said Christian Arbeit, Chairman of the 1. FC Union Berlin foundation, "UNION VEREINT. Schulter an Schulter".
About the park railway
The Wuhlheide Parkeisenbahn is a real railway operated by children aged eleven and older, as well as young people, under the guidance of volunteer adults. They take on many important tasks and functions, from conductors to local supervisors, from train drivers to station masters. In a modular system, children can acquire new qualifications as they grow older. As a result, the Parkeisenbahn is not only a fantastic offer for technical education but also a form of vocational training. Responsibility, reliability, and teamwork are at the core of this initiative - values that are important not only in the railway sector.
For daycares and schools, the Parkeisenbahn offers age-appropriate project lessons, providing a practical way to make theoretically acquired knowledge demonstrable.
In addition to the approximately thirty-minute "normal" round trips through the Volkspark Wuhlheide on weekends and during school holidays, the Parkeisenbahn organizes special themed trips throughout the year, on festivals such as Easter or Christmas, memorial days like Children's Day, or seasonal events like school enrollment. Depending on the occasion, trips are combined with highlights such as the appearance of a Santa Claus, an Easter egg hunt, or a tasty snack. Visitors can experience the park during these events in very different seasons, as well as at various times of day and even at night.
